NOSARA: Top Place to Visit in 2014
Of course, I love Nosara. And I assume if you’re reading this, you love Nosara. But how do you feel about many, many, many people loving Nosara? Last week, CNN voted it one of the top places in the world to visit for the second year in a row.
SURFING IS…
NOTE: Today we launch our new series: “Surfing is..”—first person statements about what the sport means to different surfers. We ask this question as a way to share stoke and also to ask you to consider what surfing brings to your life. Enjoy!
Surfing is… a lesson in contradictions. It’s a completely selfish activity that dictates your time and energy relative to other aspects of your life. Yet it teaches you to manage your time wisely. It can be your solitude and peace of mind. It can also cause an incredible amount of grief, frustration, and anger. Surfing can bring out qualities such as patience, calm under pressure and perspective. Then surfing can make you mad, impatient, rushed, frazzled, sloppy and narrow-minded. It can evoke genuine stoke and happiness for another human being, and then cause bitterness, jealousy and envy. Surfing is merely a reflection of one’s self and idea of self.
Do One Thing: Stay Away from Styrofoam
Besides the fact that so-called “disposable” Styrofoam and plastic tableware sit in the landfill forever, according to the EPA, carcinogenic polystyrene—which makes Styrofoam—is the fifth largest creator of hazardous waste. Want a side of cancer with that shake? Instead, bring your own cups and tableware, or look for compostable disposables made from veggies like potatoes—no, they won’t melt under your stir-fry.
GUIONES SURF PHOTO OF THE WEEK
Is this Wave a Shut-Down Close-Out, or Make-Able, Race-Track Thrill ? Wave Selection, a more nuanced skill than rote physical practice, is as much Art as Science. The answer to the Original Question lies in the Timing, Agility, Equipment, Commitment and Experience of the Rider. You’ll Never Know, Unless You Go!

A Thriving Green Wall in Madrid
When the autumn winds finally stripped the New York City trees of their more stubborn remaining leaves, I found myself thinking about my favorite green spot in Madrid, the last city I called home. Completed in 2008 by French botanist Patrick Blanc, together with Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, this 78 foot high vertical garden incorporates 15,000 plants of 250 species that are still thriving in the center of the city. Artfully arranged to be a living painting, the green wall helps to cool and filter the air around it, while creating a beautiful visual counterpoint to the oxidized iron cladding of the adjacent CaixaForum museum. It is a green design moment to be considered and enjoyed by those walking in Madrid’s cultural district, as well as by those of us already daydreaming about the return of Spring.
