SURFING IS…

Tyler Breuer

NOTE: Today we launch our new series: “Surfing is..”—first person statements about what the sport means to different surfers. We ask this question as a way to share stoke and also to ask you to consider what surfing brings to your life.  Enjoy!

If someone asked me to describe Tyler Breuer in one sentence, I’d explain that he’s pretty much the stoke master of the New York surf scene—which is why I asked him to go first in our new series “Surfing Is…”  No one is as stoked—all the time—as Tyler.  His family owns one of the original surf shops in the area and his company, SMASH, organizes a variety of events where the New York surf community can come together to celebrate, learn and often times, do some good (most of his events have some fundraising component). Read Tyler’s response to “Surfing Is…” below.

Surfing is
… a lesson in contradictions. It’s a completely selfish activity that dictates your time and energy relative to other aspects of your life.  Yet it teaches you to manage your time wisely. It can be your solitude and peace of mind. It can also cause an incredible amount of grief, frustration, and anger. Surfing can bring out qualities such as patience, calm under pressure and perspective. Then surfing can make you mad, impatient, rushed, frazzled, sloppy and narrow-minded. It can evoke genuine stoke and happiness for another human being, and then cause bitterness, jealousy and envy. Surfing is merely a reflection of one’s self and idea of self.
