Lined Up: There are beach break days where all variables come together. On such days, the experienced Surfer will wait, able to discern patterns in the Ocean’s language of shifting, lurching waves encountering shallow bottom. Occasionally an “outside” wave will just pass the first sandbar, thus retaining its full potential as it stands up with all force on the “inside” to unload it’s beautiful, violent energy. This rider’s track testifies to his wave knowledge and skill. In early, “fading” to ensure position, then “coming off the bottom” and projecting down the line to maximize speed, he is flawless in his approach.

Rarely setting its little feet on the ground, the Kinkajou is well suited to its nocturnal life in the treetops. Also known as the honey bear because of its thick golden fur and insatiable sweet tooth, the Kinkajou uses its sharp claws and long tail to maneuver quickly and easily among the branches it calls home. Though in appearance it looks similar to a small primate, the Kinkajou is no monkey. Rather, it is closely related to the raccoon, and ventures out at night to feed on its preferred sweet treats of ripe fruits and flower nectar. Its nighttime movements in the tree canopy means it is not often seen in the wild, but it makes its presence known through its high-pitched screeches, hisses, and barks before tucking itself cozily into its tail and snoozing away the daylight hours high in a nook of its favorite tree.

Mother doesn’t necessarily know best. Most of us clean our houses with the products that we remember from childhood—if it was good enough for mom, it’s good enough for us. But the chemicals in cleaning products introduced since the 1950s have been linked to illnesses like asthma and allergies, among other nasties too numerous to mention. Try simple, chemical-free formulas based on tried-and-true cleaners like baking soda and vinegar. You can even make your own for pennies, and add essential oils for a more pleasantly scented experience. These are the cleaners your grandmother probably used. Maybe Mom should have listened to her!

The Museum of Contemporary Art and Design in San Jose has curated an upcoming exhibit that aims to answer questions about contemporary art from Central America. Divided into four rooms, each one presents a different take on the matter. In the first, the works feature the body as a means of exploring culture and art. The second focuses on conceptualism and the process of ephemeral performative art. The third room explores the cultural implications that outsiders place upon the the culture of Costa Rica and what it means for art to represent the country. The fourth uses maps to redefine the way we think of boundaries of where art comes from geographically, and what that means.
The museum describes the exhibition as such:
“What does it mean to be contemporary? What and who are contemporaries? THE DAY THAT WE CONTEMPORARY is an exhibition project that opens these questions and confronts us with the problematic concept of ‘contemporary Central American art’ and others that have been frequently used in the path of MADC.”

Antibacterials like triclosan interfere with testosterone production and have been detected in breast milk; overuse prevents them from working when they’re really needed, such as to fight things like E. coli and Salmonella bacteria. Studies have shown that hot water and soap work just as well (or better) to fight germs and don’t mess with us, or the ecosystem.
