Yellow 5, Red 40, and six other widely used artificial dyes found in sugary cereals, candies, sodas and snack foods have been linked to hyperactivity and behavior problems in children and should be prohibited from use in foods, according to the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest. And don’t just think they stop at candy: More than a dozen varieties of lunch meats contain artificial food dyes. Read your labels to avoid food dyes or, if you want a cheat sheet, look for USDA Certified Organic foods, which are certified by the government to not contain artificial ingredients like food dyes. And when it comes to Easter eggs, try DIYing your own: Blueberries, artichokes, onions and beets all make great all-natural dyes!
