Marc Newson at Gagosian Gallery

Michael recently ferreted out an art show we’d all like: Gagosian’s Chelsea Gallery is displaying several objects by Australian designer Marc Newson, including surfboards made of hollow nickel. Michael will be blogging about the installation soon, but in the meanwhile, New Yorkers should go check it out before it comes down on March 3rd.

There’s also a nice New Yorker Magazine piece for Talk of the Town about Newson’s work at Gagosian.

Marc Newson table

The postcard image is NOT the surfboard, it’s actually a table designed by Newson (from bonluxat.com).

I had a great Marc Newson designed watch — great in that it looked cool, with a technical, but not too, even slightly butch face, and a domed crystal. Sadly the crystal popped off during take off one flight. Repair time? 1 year.

Then I got a really great Marc Newson designed bike — great in that it was glow in the dark and made of experimental aircraft material (allegedly). It was so streamlined that it was impossible to lock up. And I realized that it was just too noticable, even during daylight hours for me to feel comfortable riding it.

I guess I am feeling for those Russian astronauts for whom Newson was apparently designing a space station. At least if there’s an accident or something doesn’t function they will die/suffer in splendid surroundings.
