I arrived back in Costa Rica the other day. A last minute change of plans meant that I had to grab a taxi ride from the airport in Liberia. Juanel was my driver. I must have been smiling from ear to ear because he asked me in a very bemused way, “Do you love my country?â€

Smallest Grom Ever!!!

I saw this cutie pie surfing the other day. I don’t know her name or age, but I’m guessing she’s around 4 years old. Imagine when she’s 12! She’s gonna shred!!!!
Note the very cute pink bikini and the relaxed stance. This kid has style!
Inconvenient Truth
An Inconvenient Truth just won for best documentary!
In Nosara, at John’s suggestion, I rented An Inconvenient Truth from the Frog Pad, and watched it on my laptop, in my room, before going to sleep. Those of you who’ve seen it can imagine what an intense experience that was. The next day, John had said, “I’m so sorry. No one should have to watch it alone.” OK! Thanks John!

Greendimes
So John’s earlier post about Greendimes led me their great blog. In one amusing entry, the Greendimes staff blogs about what they do when what they do when their boss is away. What do they do? They have a contest. They see which among them dreams up the best socially-conscious outfit they would wear to the Grammys. Their elected winner is a “blue-velvet dress” with a sign that reads “Animals are Little People in Fur Coats!” Also on their blog is (more…)
Looks Beautiful…Just Don’t Surf!

I was out here in LA for meetings this Oscar week and got an offer to borrow a board. Then it rained, and I was shocked to learn that the pollution is so bad that you’re not supposed to surf for three days afterwards. I knew you weren’t supposed to surf the next day, but three days? People, we have got to clean things up, and for God’s sake, let’s not let this happen in Costa Rica. I don’t know it for a fact, but I have heard that the U.S. was pushing Costa Rica to privatize its beaches as part of CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) and that Costa Rica asserted itself and said no. Memo to the U.S.: Don’t you think it’s time to take a page from Costa Rica vis-a-vis beaches when we can’t get in the water for three freaking days after it rains? Oh, and if you want to do more to clean things up, here’s a good organization to check out http://www.surfrider.org/.
La Luna
On my second evening in Nosara, a bunch of “Harmonizers” went over to La Luna: one of the few restaurants in Nosara right on the waterfront. Apparently, it was built before regulations prevented direct waterfront development. We were a funny sight: a centipede of people stumbling around in the dark, except for Paul, who sped right along – either he has nocturnal vision, or he was not kidding when he said that he’d eaten at La Luna every night of the week.

Fever Charts
From the Sierra Club: several charts based on the National Climatic Data Center’s findings that 2006’s average U.S. temperature was the warmest on record!
The map breaks their findings down by state, so you can see which states had the worst “fever” last year.
Seriousness aside, notice that the big climate change loser last year was New Jersey. The New Yorkers I know are laughing…
