So, when I got to LA this time I rang up my friend, artist Lauren Bon and said “Let’s catch up! What are you up to?” Lauren sent me a link to Not a Cornfield (link below when you click “more”). Lauren has embarked on a project that is part earth sculpture, part experiment and part urban healing. 32 acres of brownfield in downtown LA have been cleaned, millions of seeds planted and beautiful things are developing as well as questions about what constitutes public space. Lauren also formed FarmLab which itself is another hybrid — so much that’s interesting these days is hybrid! — think tank/art production fund. Lauren, you always blow me away when I see you but this time you really did it.

    hey John,

    i always wondered for the greater meaning of the corn installation. when i’m in la, i enjoy a visit to china town, and there’s the corn. what is the evolution of the project? does your friend have a lease on the land? i love it!
