Just to give some background, I’d never even seen a surfing movie before getting to Nosara. I live in New York, and, for example, I just calculated this little statistic, and found out that I own 5 times more black sweaters than bathing suits — note that’s just counting the black sweaters — if we allow “navy blue” and “dark gray” and “less-dark-gray” and “between black and gray” sweaters, that number will just shoot through the roof.
So, for my first (and second) surfing attempt, I did lots of things. I did not surf.
Here’s some things I managed to do:
* Get rolled over by waves
* Inhale salt water
* Watch others surf
* Get scared
* Ask John if the “stuff on the board” (surf wax) was coagulated salt from the ocean
It was a real sign of John’s generous character that he managed not to laugh too hard at me!
And Susan showed me how to turtle. I guess something was accomplished…
(The image is a view of Harmony’s beach from the water — I waded out a bit to take the photo.)

Linda - that’s interesting that you ask. I didn’t put two and two together, but I recently bought the first turquoise sweater I’ve ever owned! The Harmony Hotel lifestyle must be rubbing off in more ways than were expected!
