I had been curious about sand surfing, so this last Fall, on our way to the Maldives, we stopped in Dubai and drove out to the desert to try it. I can tell you that the scary thing wasn’t sand surfing but rather driving up to the highest dunes to get decent pitch for your ride. As anyone who has driven in deep sand knows, the wheel feels loose and you have to keep your speed up. Combine that with stomach clenching drops that would roll the car three or four times and you get a feel for what getting to the ‘peak’ was like.

As for the sand surfing itself… You do it on old, beat up snowboards (at least that’s how they do it there) and I can say its a little slower than wave surfing.

Wow, that looks like so much fun. Does falling in sand hurt more or less than snow / waves?

Sand Surfing_By the end of that I truly was a SandyMan! I think I still have fine red grains lodged deep in my ears. As for the ride, the desent is a bit on the slow side on the busted up kitty snow boards, but as John says, the renegade joy ride drivers that get you up there in the first place make up for the lack of Gforce in the turns!-S
